These two powerhouses are the highest remaining seeds and the favorites to win their first French Open title. The last time Alcaraz and Sinner played against each other in a Grand Slam, it was their legendary US Open quarterfinal clash of 2022. Sinner is now set to become the World No. 1 following the conclusion of this tournament.

It was an assured performance from a player at the top of his game, with his relentless power simply too much for the 33-year-old.

Sinner, who after securing his first Slam in Melbourne added titles in Rotterdam and Miami to his collection, now faces a familiar opponent in Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard looked razor sharp as he dispatched Stefanos Tsitsipas with ease in the quarter-finals and is looking at home on the famous red clay courts. The pair will now play each other for the ninth time and there is nothing between them with both players holding four wins apiece.

The two main contenders to lift the coveted Coupe des Mousquetaires are set to battle it out on Friday as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner face off in this French Open Men's semifinal.

With defending champ Novak Djokovic's withdrawal through injury on Wednesday, the path looks clear for this much-anticipated clash between Wimbledon winner Alcaraz and Australian Open champion Sinner.

Despite question marks over their fitness coming into this tournament, both players have dropped just a single set each on their way to this stage. Alcarez will draw encouragement from winning the most recent encounter between the two at Indian Wells back in March, a result which brought the pair level at 4-4 in their head-to-heads.

Jannik Sinner is just 22, and Carlos Alcaraz just 21, yet they’ve already built quite a rivalry heading into their French Open semifinal on Friday.

Spain’s Alcaraz owns two Grand Slam titles and spent time at No. 1 in the rankings. Italy’s Sinner won the Australian Open in January and will ascend to No. 1 next week. This will be their ninth meeting; the series is tied at 4-all.

“No one has ever played like Alcaraz. No chance. And Sinner? The same thing,” said Mats Wilander, who was ranked No. 1 and won three of his seven Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros in the 1980s. “They’re like, ‘Whoa! What and where did they come from?’”

That’s because they are widely considered the likely next two greats of the game and because of how exciting some of their past contests have been, most notably Alcaraz’s victory in the U.S. Open quarterfinals two years ago that ended at 2:50 a.m. after five sets of thrill-a-minute, back-and-forth action.

“I hope he and I keep playing each other for the next 10 years,” said Alcaraz, who went on to win the championship in New York that year and also triumphed at Wimbledon last year. “He makes me a better player. He makes me wake up in the morning and try to improve.”

Alcaraz arrived in Paris with some concerns about his right forearm. Sinner came in nursing a hip injury. Those issues kept them out of the clay-court Italian Open last month, but they have looked just fine at the French Open: Each has dropped just one set through five matches.

They seem to bring out the best in one another while forging a new path in their sport. Both can cover the court as well as anyone, the 6-foot-2 (1.88-meter) Sinner with his instincts and lanky limbs and the 6-foot (1.83-meter) Alcaraz with his “How did he possibly get to that?” fleetness and reflexes.

Alcaraz entered the tournament as the third seed, making him one of the best players at the French Open. He has played five matches thus far and has only lost one set. So, Alcaraz has beaten his opponents in 15 out of 16 sets at the tournament, which highlights his incredible play. His dominant performances include a 3-0 win over #9 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Sinner is the second seed at this French Open, and he has displayed his incredible skill throughout the event. Similar to Alcaraz, Sinner has only played more than three sets in one his matches at the 2024 French Open. So, both competitors are entering this matchup with great recent form.

Sinner had a 3-0 win over #10 Grigor Dimitrov in his quarterfinal match, which was his most impressive victory at this year’s event. In Sinner’s most recent match against Alcaraz, he lost in the Indian Wells semifinals. So, Sinner will try to avenge that loss and stay in contention for his second Grand Slam title.
